“We imagine a city whose streets reflect the full spectrum of its residents’ creativity.”

Mission: Spiral Q builds strong and equitable communities characterized by joy, creativity, can-do attitudes, and the courage to act on their convictions. We imagine a city whose streets reflect the full spectrum of its residents’ creativity. We see a responsive and engaged society that rallies consistently to overcome the challenges of discrimination and oppression. We envision a world of abundance that mobilizes its resources to nurture shared vitality.

Programs: Spiral Q lives at the intersection of arts and social justice.

Established in 1996, Spiral Q uses popular arts (parades, print, pageantry, puppets) to build an urban arts democracy rooted in principles of accessibility, inclusion, self-determination, collaboration, sustainability, and life long learning. Spiral Q works with

reclaimed and recycled materials, teaches in schools and community organizations throughout the city, leads collaborative planning of giant public art projects, and supports creative community organizing. Spiral Q’s work is nationally recognized for its originality, its capacity to inspire individuals of all ages and backgrounds, and its ability to creatively revitalize and invigorate communities. Through our work, Spiral Q (a vast community of artists, educators, youth, seniors, organizers, neighbors, etc) has created a collection of over 2,000 puppets and artifacts large and small that serve as a living record of Philadelphia arts and activism since 1996. These works are available for educational and entertainment, whether to help a community raise awareness about particular issues or to bring community voices, visions, and spirit to events. The Q’s work has been recognized throughout its history with the 2010 Bartol Arts Education Award, support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Philadelphia Foundation’s Good Governance Award in 2006, the Peace Award from the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom in 2002, and the Bread and Roses Community Fund’s Community Empowerment Award in 2001.
