University Community Collaborative to develop media literacy workshop

November 11, 2012 by admin in PYMC Supported Projects

We are excited to award our first Project Stipend to UCC.Read more about their project proposal below:

The University Community Collaborative will develop a media literacy workshop with

Leaders Corps members (former participants who are now college students) who will then facilitate the workshops at 3-5 local high schools and one community center (i.e. PhillyCAM). Each workshop will be followed by reflection among LC and Collaborative staff with adaptations made where needed. As a result of these workshops and reflection activities, it is anticipated that the Collaborative will have a media literacy curriculum and prototype for delivering media literacy workshops in a large number of schools and community settings.

How will this stipend help support this activity?
The stipend will compensate the LC members

who will develop, facilitate and document the workshops. It will also support supplies and equipment needed for the success of the workshop.

How will youth benefit from this activity?
This workshop will be fun, engaging and enhance the critical thinking skills and creativity of young people. Each workshop will result in a concrete product (such as a video or meme) that demonstrates critical thinking and the process of “talking back” to media.

Will youth be involved in the planning of this activity?
The Leaders Corps members will be involved in the planning, execution and documentation of the workshops.
