Notes from December 11th, 2012 PYMC Meeting
Thanks to Might Writers for hosting us in their MightyPost storefront space on South Street. There were 10 people in attendance, with several new faces which is always great!
We opened by checking in around
some challenge or issues we are facing in our work. Here’s a sampler:
Project Stipends are open to all PYMC members, to be awarded on a first come, first serve basis. Read more about the initiative and the proposal form here. The Steering Committee will be meeting on Jan 11 to review current proposals. Don’t miss this opportunity to initiate a project with another organization, or try something new within your organization!
Peer to Peer Workshops
We had a good discussion around issues of engagement that seem to surface for different groups, and we all have different strategies for making our programs exciting for young people. We decided that the next workshop should have a peer to peer element with young people. We tentatively decided on early March to set up workshop that would invite different program staff to talk about strategies they use to engage their participants, and then dedicate half the time to a ‘panel’ with youth to give their feedback about strategies that work for them.
Membership: There is a current call for new members to PYMC. If you are interested in becoming a core member, please read over the membership guidelines and rewards on the PYMC site, and contact Laura for details on how to apply. We plan to take a vote on New Members in January, so please get in touch before the new year!
Formation of the Youth Committee
Jeannine Cook joined us at the meeting today to introduce herself and be part of the discussion around youth committee recruitment since she will be the primary facilitator for this group.
We currently have 7 applications. We are still looking for 3-4 more candidates. If you have interested students, please have them contact me this week. We would like to hold to the MONDAY, DEC 17 DEADLINE. ‘Event Planning’ is not just a gal’s thing- so encourage your young men to apply too!
Jeannine is happy to plan a visit to your site to meet interested students in person and spend 5 mins talking about this opportunity. Please email Laura to help set this up. email@example.com
Speed Networking Activity
We tried a new activity that paired up attendees for 5 mins at a time to quickly get to know one another and discuss ways they might work together in the future. This was a really fun and effective activity that I hope can be a mainstay of PYMC meetings!
